Sort of...well, we'll just say yes, you do have to write a test
Because engineers are crazy like that.

The results of the test will determine what streams you will be eligible for, such as civil, electrical, etc.

^ Really? :O That sounds scary... I thought it was just so the professors were aware of how strong your math skills are.

Since when?!
Your first-year marks determine which streams you're eligible for. This test has nothing to do with it.

Ya, funkdmonkey is just yankin' your chain. But you do need to try hard on the test. It's really hard.
When I took it, it seemed impossible at first. I hadn't studied math over the summer, so it seemed like gibberish to me. But eventually, I got what was going on.

It's used so the professors can get a feel for what needs to be covered during review. For example if they see a lot of people are having issues with derivatives or integrals or set theory, they'll make sure to focus more on that.
As well, should there be a "tie" between you and someone else for a spot in a second year program they will go back and may use it to make a decision but I haven't heard of it happening to anyone in the time I've been here.
Just do your best and you should be fine.
Enjoy frosh week!

It tends to be a pretty brutal and wide-ranging test though; from what I hear from my eng friends it wasn't a fun experience

That test still haunts me to this day. I barely passed it when I had to take it two years ago. Most of my friends weren't so lucky.

Yeah, Mohit is right.
I remember a few of my friends didn't do so well on the tests, and of course all the professors have access to your scores...
Well suffice to say, they weren't around after christmas =\

This was probably the second hardest test I had to write last year, after the first Chem mid-term. Goodluck, honestly.

Nothing could be as bad as that first Chem mid-term. Just study really hard and know your material and you should pass it
