You're right. It is a silly question.
Stop signs are for vehicles.

Yes, if you're walking on the street you're jaywalking. We have perfectly good sidewalks for a reason.

kinda stupid to be given a ticket cause i'm pretty sure in some cities at a stop sign intersection if there's no cars around a cyclist can just slow down look all ways and continue through the stop sign cause it takes a lot more effort for a cyclist to start up again (i read this was on the internet)
althoguh you're lucky it was campus police that ticketed you cause my sister's friend got ticketed for running a stop sign in toronto (it wasn't a major intersection it was a residential area) and got demerit points on his driver's license. last time i checked you didn't need a driver's license to ride a bike. hopefully it gets thrown out in court.

Yup, the law says you can't be under the influence while operating a vehicle, doesn't say what type.

Apparently you can't get a DUI, but you can still get other charges under the Highway Act:
Quote:
For one thing, you can't be charged with impaired driving if you're intoxicated while riding a bicycle since a bike is not classified as a vehicle under that law, says Sergeant Tim Burrows of the Toronto Police Traffic Services unit. But a drunk cyclist could be charged under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (which is similar in most provinces) for careless driving, at a fine of $110. And there's always the public intoxication charge which could land you in the drunk tank or cost you at least a $50 fine.

not that I agree..I think it's ridiculous.. You can't win really... you get caught driving home...charged... you get caught riding a bike home... charged (if the cop is an ass)... AND you get caught walking home drunkenly...CHARGED ...
wtf is drunk in public... it's ridiculous that a cop has that much authority... wtf do they expect people to do other than drunkenly stumble home instead of getting behind the wheel?!

I wish they would give more tickets to people on bikes who don't stop at stop signs. Im tired of dodging bikes all the time on campus!

I especially hate it when people ride their bikes through the "pedestrian friendly zones" They really need to do something about that.

They should ticket all people who ride their bikes on the sidewalks/pathways. I've been almost run over too many times.
In your case though all you had to give them was your real name and address. You don't have to show ID.

It sucks, but it's the rules. A friend of mine was given a parking ticket and tried to not pay it - but they ended up getting letters to their house and had to pay. Unless you lied to security about your name/address, you 'll have to pay.

This.
Was gonna say the exact same thing.
Rules are rules. Time is irrelevant, they'd ticket a car too that blew past a stop sign at 3am.

No, that's why they put stop signs there, so people can cross the street.
I'm glad they gave you a ticket, all the people who ride their bikes through stop signs and almost run me over are rather annoying

I've noticed a lot of people suggest giving Mac 5-0 a fake name/student #....just so you know, they can easily cross check that on the spot when they radio the info into their dispatcher.
