Upper year residence
Hi!
I'm wondering whether you request for the building + room type as upper years or just room type. And are you guaranteed (your choice of) residence if you've got an 11-12 avg? Thanks!

You pick room types.

With an 11/12 average you're basically 99.9999% guaranteed your choice of room type. There would have to be 2000 people with a higher average than you before you get declined.

Does that mean all upper years get their choice of room given that they are guaranteed residence?

Not necessarily. You get your choice based on your GPA if you are at least on Dean's Honor list.

That means people with a 12.0 pick before people with an 11.9, people with an 11.9 pick before people with an 11.8, etc.

When you get down to someone with a 9.5 GPA, he might really want a single with a washroom, but they might have all been taken by other upper years/first years with a 95% high school average, so he/she will have to settle for their second/third choices.

Whoa. So the upper year res people get pooled with the first years? Because a 95% high school avg doesn't necessarily guarantee you your first choice of res, just a single room, right?

You don't get pooled with first years. I just drew that comparison because most if not all upper years want single rooms, so you inevitably end up competing with 95% high school average first years who are guaranteed a single.

You don't get to choose your residence anymore, just your room type. So you could end up in any residence.

I got a single room in upper year and my average wasn't that high (not low but not like DHL material). 20% of residence spaces are reserved for upper years and I'm quite sure most of those are single bed spaces.

i did not have a 12 average...but it was double digit and I was placed in Keyes for my second straight year...it all comes down to a lottery..i remember first year i was guaranteed a single room due to my average but me and a friend tried to get a North quad room and well ended up putting Mary Keyes as our last pick..and well lucky us we were put in Keyes..and im living there again second year..but yeah upper year your marks probably increase probablilty of your choice but in reality its a lottery so yeah

Definitely because of convenience, and everything is there. You can wake up 5 minutes before class and still make it, where as if you are off campus in Mississauga or oakville, not quite possible. As well as that internet doesn't get cutoff mysteriously due to overuse, it just slows down.

Is there a way to request NOT to have a (just one) residence building?

I've lived on Residence all 4 years, and lived off campus during one summer. I like living on campus better. It's more expensive for sure, but for me personally, it's just a better option than off-campus living.
