Is it allowed for first year students to bring a voice recorder along?

Usually yeah, but you should ask each individual prof if they are ok eith it.

Smartpen by Livescribe. It records audio as well as what you write (on a special notebook). You can replay parts of your lectures by tapping where you wrote on your notes.

There aren't special rules for first-years versus upper years...Some profs allow it, some consider their lectures to be their own property or whatever and won't let you unless you have a CSD accomodation.
