Volunteers needed for DC++
Hi future and returning residence people!
I'm the owner/operator of MacHub, the DC++ file sharing server that runs for McMaster University. Over the past several years we've had great people providing content for you guys to download without asking anything in return. Unfortunately both wuZheng and r3q have graduated and will no longer be living on campus to provide you with that glorious, glorious pornography (er, I mean..TV shows and movies).
Now I can try and assume someone else will step in for these guys, but it's hard to boast a library that big for the entire Mac community, so I want to make plans to keep this res community going!
Who I need
- Promoters: People that show others how to set up DC++ and create a shared folder on their laptops, MacBooks, and PCs, and also spread the word about MacHub.
- Seeders: This one is easy, just share your stuff! More importantly, I am looking for people who are willing for me to place a SeedBox in their res room. The process should be simple and easy, your internet connection shouldn't be affected, and remote desktop will allow me to maintain the boxes without having to physically knock on your door!
- Admins: Senior MacHub members that want to contribute to the community, find other promoters, supporters, and seeders, and will participate in MacHub events and meetups.
- Supporters: Getting Seed Boxes and hard drives to store data on is expensive, and let's not forget about the hosting! I'm currently paying about $25 a month to host MacHub, and will be spending about $400 in equipment for each Seed Box I wish to deploy (I want to set up 3). Your donations would be extremely helpful! In return, I will provide the most current TV shows and the hottest movies on MacHub the moment they're online!
How to apply
Reply here or shoot off an email to [email protected]l.com and I'd be happy to work with you!
WTF is a MacHub?!
An online residence-only DC++ network hub that lets you download massive files in a matter of minutes! (TV show? 2 minutes.) When you get to your res room, download DC++ or ShakesPeer for OSX and have it connect to machub.org to get started!

I remember how great DC++ was in first year! I forget, is it totally off limits to me since I am off campus? Or is it just slow?

@Melanie think it's because it uses the res internet as a direct connection creating a LAN instead of using it as actual internet.

Same I would love it.
Although how about providing content? My collection will pass a little over 1TB by the end of summer, perhaps every month I can transfer everything I have to someones Harddrive and they can have all that on DC++.
Most of them are High Quality Movies and TV shows(1-8GB each) and a fair amount of programs.
I also just RECENTLY riped a collection of 80DVDs with most of them being Live Music Videos. I have the .iso as well as the converted videos for iTunes
So I have a decent collection that I would love to share

If I was in Res I would share tons again (at the end of first year, I was sharing 1tb) but I didn't even use MI at the time. If there are any CA's here, they should post it on the wall for a little bit to encourage it, since that I where I found out about community stuff (or on the way to Centro going up the stairs)

I'm on res this year and can probably help out as a promoter or admin, although I'm only here during the first term.

:( If I was on res, I would totally offer.
I'm so glad I grabbed a few things off DC++ when I had the chance.

No, as it says in the original post, it's residence-only.

Hey guys, thanks for all the questions and support.
While I'm claiming that MacHub is res-only, you can still connect for the chat (and we'd love to have you for that), but I assure you the speeds for downloading will be slower than torrenting, not to mention that UTS firewalls RezNet into a LAN. It's only between other RezNet computers where you can get those blazing fast speeds that everyone loved.
particle, I'd be happy to have you on both aspects, since once we get the ball rolling in 1st Term, we'll be able to reach out to everyone else via the DC++ chat! Would you also be able to host a SeedBox or are you not interested or worried about the risk? What I would do is set up an ethernet switch so you can still sign onto RezNet separately from the SeedBox, meaning that your daily limit won't be affected by the SeedBox.

The wall? What wall do CAs post on?
If I have any CAs floating around I'd be beyond thrilled to have them on board!

There is a bulletin board with messages on each floor (in McKay anyways) or in the lobbies. I don't know how many actually read them, but I did!
