water privatization in Canada
I saw a brief segment in the news mentioning something about water privatization in Canada. A bunch of ppl from CUPE were protesting it at Ottawa. Has anyone else heard about this? It was a brief segment and all I gathered from it is that it would affect some first nations communities.

I'm surprised something as serious as this got such little coverage. Usually this is stuff I read about happening in other countries due to private interests, not in Canada that supposed to be a supporter of basic rights.

In 2002, Canada voted against a motion brought before the United Nations to add the 'Right to Drinking Water and Sanitation' to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Why? We own one-third of the world's fresh water. As for conditions on reserves, sanitation issues need to be addressed, among other political and social issues.

If you're looking for more information on this, I highly suggest http://freeflo.org/.

We talked about this in my Indigenous Peoples Human Rights class last week as part of a student-run seminar on water. Well, the prof brought it up...

Anyways, from what they described, the privatization of water would actually would be affecting ALL communities, and not just FN.
