English isn't my strongest subject. I was never able to get over a 70 in the essays (69 and 65).

Yes.
As an English/CSCT major it been my experience that, it's hard to get high marks (A - A+) in your classes.
Average mark in a first year English class is C/C+

It's all that subjective grading. I had so many essays last year, I'm just happy I managed to have nice enough TA's.
