Never got a certificate. In fact, when I started working in a lab I had to pass a more in-depth WHMIS training course: http://www.workingatmcmaster .ca/re...20WHMIS%20Core
Even after that I didn't actually receive a certificate, just a sticker and paper card telling the bio department I passed the course.
Edit: I guess I should clarify that when I say "lab" I mean working on my thesis in a professor's lab where everything is in the same room (unlike course labs where they bring everything into an empty room).

When I finished that in my first year chemistry courses, it was just a "pass or fail". I think this is just a requirement for safety concerns in labs and just a procedure for the department to complete

What do you need the WHMIS for? Most likely science 1A00 won't cut it. As Jeremy said, you'd need more intense WHMIS training for pretty much anything.
Also, I wouldn't count on a certificate...EOHSS kind of sucks at record keeping. I have obtained my records from them previously, handed in updates to them as recently as September, and then a couple of months ago when I wanted to get an updated training record to send to FHS, they told me they had no record of me ever existing.

That sucks... wouldn't your department have a record of it though? I know the biology department scanned my EOHSS card and typed some stuff into my file... couldn't you use that instead of having to do the training again?

FHS had my old file, from before EOHSS lost my documents, but I needed the recent version that contained the yearly updates. EOHSS and FHS are separate, but I work in two different departments (chem and biochem), and the chem dept goes through EOHSS and the biochem dept goes through the FHS safety office, so I always needed to go through a million emails to send my records back and forth. And then suddenly I failed to exist as far as EOHSS was concerned...which is kind of a problem for my job in the chem dept.
