I looked into it, and yes. We get ONE copy of Windows 7 Home or Pro for $29.99 USD. So it'll be a little over 30 bucks for us.
Microsoft knows perfectly well that it has to nail this with people, so they're really not planning on making a lot of cash from individual sales of the OS to the public. Their big money comes from licencing and installing on prebuilt computers by the millions.

I found this website...
http://www.mydigitallife.inf o/2009...e-steal-offer/
Apperently right now its only available in the US but it also says:
The offer is live now for U.S. residents, and runs until January 3rd, 2010. Microsoft plans similar offers in Canada, Australia, Korea, Mexico, France, and Germany, though the prices may be different, and most of those countries will have to wait until Oct. 22nd for the promotion to go live. Only one product may be purchased per eligible student.

I'll say this much; I bought an operating system for the first time this year (Snow Leopard), and if Microsoft doesn't follow suit then I'll just hack it as usual.
I don't think they're stupid enough to alienate all other students.

Ditto. Then if I couldn't get another copy for cheap I would hack it and put that on my desktop. Then put OS X on that too.
I love teh interwebz.

I don't get the point people are trying to make. I could run OSX on my PC if I wanted to.

Correction: never tried to run OSX on a non-Apple brand computer. When you get down to it, a computer is a computer is a computer. As long as the specific hardware requirements are met, you can run anything on any computer.

Yeah, it doesn't matter. Since OS X is now based on Intel chips, it can be run very easily on anything. It was possible before, just much more difficult.
That's why I laugh at people that buy pimped out Mac Pros. You could build an equivalent (or better!) setup for half the price.
