Yeah, a friend of mine set up a wireless network in his room last year. It would only be an issue if you're going to use the laptop in the Common Room. The walls of some rez buildings are so thick that you might not be able to receive the wireless signal in the Common Room. It really depends on the distance between your room and the Common Room though.

I'm pretty sure it's against the rules to set up a wireless router. I remember someone getting hassled about it.

I believe it's because the Cisco Clean Access Agent doesn't work if you use a wireless router. So anybody can get in if you don't set it up properly. Therefore there are some security issues.

I think so, there might not be a rule against wireless routers. But if you don't put a password they might harass you.

hi!

You won't need a wireless router but your more then welcome to bring one. The only thing they advise is that you set up a WEP/WPA key for your router. I had one in my room... it came in handy for playing LAN games in one room or having multiple laptops connecting to a ethernet port when wireless was being fussy.

i set one up last year, and since my room was right beside the common room I also used it in there. also, we moved it into my friend's room sometimes to play some cs.

it isn't completely against the rules, just as long as you know what you're doing and don't mess things up. also, security is a big deal, make sure to keep your network private.

i hid my router in my closet over christmas, since they look in the rooms then. it probably wouldn't have been an issue, but it's better to be safe.

I believe this isn't strictly against the rules but frowned upon.

it will help though if you do have a router.

i remember having to switch all the time the ethernet cord between my laptop and my xbox everytime i wanted to play, since i had barely any wifi for my laptop from my room, i had to keep it plugged in.

so yeah, your own wireless network will help, and just make sure to check the rules, ask your residence representative or something or someone from IT.

Well I wouldn't ask someone from UTS since I believe they're the ones who frown upon it.
