1st year life science (very confused)
hi. i am going into 1st year life science.
right now, i am very confused with the course selection.
i know some courses are sepearted into 2 terms, but i only know because i briefly heard it from other people.
so far, this is what i have
1AO3 BIO
1AO3 MATH
1BO3 PHYSICS
1AO3 CHEM
1YO3 KINES
1AO3 MUSIC
we need 10 courses, how do i know which of these courses provide the 2 terms??
i've been searching up, but can't really find where it is stated clearly.
what's the difference between 1AO3 and 1LS3 math courses? i've heard 1AO3 is a better one to learn. Also, 1AO3 Bio is cell and molec and 1MO3 is diversity, evolution and humanity.
so does that mean bio is an example of the course with 2 terms?
can someone clarify this?

Try using the master timetable to see what term the courses are offered in: https://adweb.cis.mcmaster.ca /mtt/

Math 1A03 is the more mathematical, theory-based math, designed for general science students that deals with more proofs and theory. Math 1LS3 involves more biological applications and how the math is applied in the real world. Both act as prerequisites for the 2nd year math courses, however I feel that because MATH 1A03 goes into more detail, it'll help you prepare more for the 2nd year math courses. This doesn't mean the difficulty of MATH 1A03/1AA3 and MATH 1LS3/1LT3 are the same.

Some courses are offered both terms (Bios like you mentioned) and some are offered in only one term (Chem 1A03). You should check when the courses are offered in the Master timetable.

Alternatively, you could also use the Time Table Generator

You can tell by looking at the course code. If it ends in a 3 (meaning 3 units), then it's a one term course... whereas 6 indicates two terms. e.g. BIO 1M03, FRENCH 1A06

BIO 1A03 and BIO 1M03 are two completely different courses.

i checked out the start video. it said 9 units are required from bio and psych
so i should be choosing bio 1A03, and 1M03 ( I heard psych is not mendatory, recommended only if you need in from second year) so if i dont take psych, then how do i fill the rest 3 units out of 9 units?
i have some idea. but still confused.

Looks like you're going to have to take PSYCH 1X03 at the very least.

Refer to this: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...12/pg1490.html

When it says "9 units from BIOLOGY 1A03, 1M03, PSYCH 1X03, 1XX3", it means you must choose at least 3 of the four courses in that list. So either choose both bios and one psych, or two psychs and one bio.

But watch out for the prerequisites for second year science programs! For example, if a second year program you are interested in requires BOTH psychs and BOTH bios, you must take all four courses in that list. The fourth course will count towards your electives.

I was in life sci first year and i took:
Chem 1A03
Chem 1AA3
Bio 1A03
Bio 1M03
Psych 1X03
Psych 1XX3
Physics 1B03
Math 1LS3
Math 1LT3
Econ 1B03

This covers all 10 courses you need. I highly recommend taking the first 8 courses I listed as it will keep your options open for upper years and they are prereqs for many upper year courses (you can replace math 1ls3 with math 1a03 if you want but i would recommend taking 1ls3. it is MUCH easier and it completes your calc requirement for life sci. math 1ls3 first term with math 1lt3 2nd term will complete a full year of calc requirement needed for some professional schools). The last 2 courses I listed are electives so you can choose anything. I see you already want to do kin and music, so those would be your 2 electives
