Anthro 2U03
I really enjoyed the material for this class, and am presently still interested in Syphallis (okay, I know it sounds weird...but...it's interesting!).
However, I did not like the large class size (300ish) and complete lack of interaction with the prof (Padiak). I also didn't like the...

It's full right now, so hopefully someone drops their seat at some point.

Took this course Winter 2011.
The material in this course was fine. You'll get a pretty fair understanding of about 7-8 diseases during the course and some of their historical significance. Understanding the social implications of diseases and plagues was fairly interesting but some of the theories about a literary basis to plagues could be a stretch.
The prof, Dr. Herring was a fine teacher, and communicated her passion throughout the course.
My main concern with this course was the marking. Our first assignment in the course asked us to come up with solutions to a theoretical plague. At this point in the course, we had learned nothing to apply to the scenario and were encouraged not to use outside resources. No strict guidelines were given during marking as to what was being looked for and the large majority of the marks centered around the low 70s with a few 60s and 80s. Midterms were not overly difficult but subjective marking in the short answer and essay sections of the tests made a fairly low grade ceiling. By contrast, tutorial participation marks were generally high.
I was still able to get a 12 in this course, but it took considerably more effort than I had expected based on the description of 2U03 as a bird course.

No. The final is the same as the midterms. I took the course with Dr. Herring and the final was short answer, long answer and multiple choice including an essay. It is an amazing course and if you study for it, a 12 should be manageable to get.

The information is EXTREMELY interesting. Its not very biology based...but you do learn about the biological aspect of the diseases that are discussed. However it isn't necessary to be a biology or science student to do well in this course.
Some of the diseases we talked about were Smallpox, Syphilis and Influenza. We watched movies on certain days which were very interesting.
There were no assignments, just 3 tests and a final. The midterms included T/F, M/C, Short answer which were mostly definitions and one long answer question..but you always had a choice for the short answer and long answer (ie 6 out of 8 or 2 out of 3).
The prof was REALLY good. She went at a steady pace and we usually covered a specific disease for a week (so approx 3 lectures for each one). She did require you to read the text because it was fair game for the tests. I even found the book interesting, it wasn't dry and sometimes you got really into it and it didn't seem like a chore to have to read and make notes.
Overall, I would DEFINITELY recommend this course. I did not find one point in the course where I thought the info/lectures were boring and that made me want to study for this course even more. GREAT COURSE!!
