am seriously sick to death of ppl saying how horrible and dangerous Hamilton is. I've lived here all of my life and am still in one piece. Yes, there are problems same as any relatively large city, but just use common sense and you'll be fine. GEESH!

Oh noes. 1 attack from a 14 year old in like, 5 years.

I walk home at 3-4 am when I'm back home in Bowmanville and couldn't feel any safer.

I was just at king and james 2 hours ago and woulda been pissing my pants if it wasn't for big, strong Reeves being there.

it's wasn't personal. the point is that it happens everywhere - and as i recall there was a huge jewelry store robbery there recently... i'm frustrated by people saying that Hamilton is bad so just stay in your little 2 block radius or else some boogeyman is going to get you.

perhaps some ppl who aren't from a city feel a little overwhelmed. i find king and james no big deal.

Well, I got mugged there last year, so it doesn't particularly bring back fond memories for me.

I'm from Orangeville, and my first year in Hamilton I did find it kind of scary, but after moving off of rez and downtown I'm not that bothered by it anymore, and as I said, I might feel a bit uncertain at night, but I feel that way anywhere if I'm by myself.

I'm sorry to hear that and can understand your reservations. I've had my own incidents too. However I don't think that, generally speaking, telling students to fear anywhere except Westdale/campus/Dundas is good either. IMO, it's better to teach people that it's okay and how to be safe but enjoy it at the same time... otherwise they miss out on so much GOOD stuff that Hamilton has to offer.

Note that this is for "homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, vehicle theft, robbery plus breaking and entering" (violent crimes). Hamilton is the second highest in Ontario.

I've lived in both Toronto (downtown Toronto) and Hamilton (Ancaster) as well as Europe, but from my experience, Hamilton is a scary place, When I go downtown especially at nighttime I can't wait to get into my car, its just a run down and iffy city, Toronto I feel perfectly safe not worried but Hamilton (in most areas) I do not feel safe, Around mcmaster is perfectly fine and along the mountain is good too, but downtown.....

Nothing Good Happens After 2 A.M. !

LOL - true. but I STILL say that students don't need to stay exclusively in the west end. There are the same poverty, addiction, crime, etc. problems in this end of town - they tend to be more hidden and in "pockets" rather than blatently obvious like downtown... which is why I say, yet again, learn to be safe in ALL areas and just enjoy what's out there. I wouldn't go walking through Gage Park in the wee hours of the morning in much the same way I wouldn't go traipsing through the underground tunnels at Carelton or walking Jane & Finch in Toronto... but I wouldn't give up on either of those cities completely either.
