look, I'm not offended at people being cautious or being unsure in a new environment. I think it's very sensible. I've said repeatedly about being safe... EVERYWHERE in Hamilton. What IS offensive is the suggestion that I'm "pushing" people into dangerous situations, or being tag-teamed by ppl who haven't even lived here for very long like I'm talking out of my rear-end or something. There have been numerous threads about not venturing out of Westdale as if there's some sort of invisible barrier and once you cross it you're ****d.

I wholly support going in daylight in groups... but that is my point in the first place. And I'm not suggesting that to fully experience Hamilton you MUST go downtown at 3 a.m. by yourself. How about Confederation Park? The Royal Botanical Gardens where you can feed birds right out of your hands? The numerous railtrails? The awesome shops along Locke Street or James Street South, or the arts district that is around King William and James Street North? Flea markets and antique shops out near hwy 5 if you drive? The farmer's market downtown Hamilton (not sure if renovations are done there yet)? etc. etc. etc.

If you choose not to - that's up to you... but don't fearmonger other ppl into missing out if they might like to try some of it. I'm simply trying to give the alternative viewpoint.

i mostly agree with you, i think hamilton is a safe place, and people are missing out by not exploring more of it. and i think a lot of people become convinced that it's a dangerous place or come from sheltered backgrounds and are scared to explore beyond the west end .. which is a shame =(. and even in the west end, people miss out on a lot of cool places .. like the westdale aviary, which is pretty neat. plus i think people forget that hamilton doesn't "end" after downtown/gore park .. it goes further east for a very long time and there are some cool places in the east end too.

failzorsoldman.

was in response to "whoa, overdramatic", not about ppl exploring the city. i'm sorry, but the comment that my suggestions might get someone robbed or hurt p***d me off.

p.s. this was not intended to be a personal argument with you, but I don't appreciate the sarcasm and insults (failzorsoldman? nice)... nor should I have responded in kind. apologies.

Jumping is probably tough to convey online, but I don't think anyone was proud of Hamilton's safety record

i live in hamilton but up the mountain (more so stony creek)
ya i agree downtown hamilton is basically the run down of the city, but every city has there areas that are like that
always asked myself why they put a university downtown? it should've been where mohawk is

I don't understand how a university located on lakeside next to a Large Cootes & Botanical Gardens Green Area can be located at a better area? It is actually perfectly located. And McMaster was founded wayy back in the 20th Century, which makes your comment even more silly.

I'm sorry but I also find it rather weird that you would prefer that McMaster be at a bubble on the Mountain and you won't have to interact with "undesirables" downtown.

if i may put my "old fogey" 2 cents in... i believe you mean 19th century and for the record, back then the hamilton mountain was mainly farmland - not really practical for a university where access to it would have been difficult. hamilton as we know it now was originally a bunch of small towns and villages and a small city centre with farmland all around it. example - the community across from the University Plaza in Dundas is called "University Gardens" because it was a farm that supplied food to the university. hard to imagine now with houses all over it. (although the streets are still largely named after the family that lived there). as the population grew, the lower city gradually joined together and then eventually spread up the escarpment. putting it in that perspective - perhaps the location of McMaster makes a bit more sense?
