^Also, when converting you have to convert each grade individually and average it out, you can't just take your 12-point average and convert it.

That's pretty ignorant of you..

some courses have final exams worth about 50%; if you simply don't do well on the exam, you're likely to fail a course.
It happens more often than you know - especially in first year when people take risks with elective courses they know nothing of.
Or people who have profs they can't understand the entire semester.
Or people who don't have as much time on their hands to study, because they have to work 25-30 hours/week to be able to pay their tuition.

There are so many reasons behind why people can get a final mark of a 0.. it could very well be that they just have no interest in the course.

The formula is
summation [Course unit * mark]/ total number units
