MacEng is talking about me. My bike was locked up right outside Hedden and it got stolen. Wasn't even a very nice bike.

Hm..good thing im bringing roller blades instead.
Anyone know if these ever get stolen? I pretty much take em everywhere with me...so no way their leaving my sight

I had my tire kicked in. Try not to park your bike near quarters, where many drunken idiots hang out :\. Really crowded areas (such as the racks in front of MUSC towards BSB) can also ruin your bike when people try to pull theirs out.
Unless you leave your rollerblades out they shouldn't get stolen.

Try not to keep your bike on campus at night and the cheaper it looks the safer it is.

Who all has access to the bike storage room in the residences? Everyone in the residence or do you have to get special permission to use it? (ie, then there's a limited number of people who would have the opportunity to damage/steal the bike from the storage area)
I want to bring my bike, but I just got it this summer and it's like a $400 bike, so I don't want to risk it being stolen.

Don't forget to lock the back wheel and the frame together. Another lock should be used to lock the bike to the rack. That is the safest way of locking your bike.
Also, have the locks facing down as much as possible.
Also, you should etch a code into the frame. It's surprising how many stolen bikes are recovered. If you have the code to identify your bike, it's easier to get back.

Everyone has the ability to access it, but I think you need to ask for a key, of which there is a finite number.

yes they do. actually hundreds of them. Invest in a lock. Maybe two locks if its a real nice bike. I've actually noticed a lot of people don't even lock their bikes. They just put it between a bunch of bikes and just leave.

I was considering biking and locking it up in my office (I'd presumably share with 5 or so other grad students).
I'd offer to store anyone else's bikes there with mine, but the logistics may be difficult (ie. will our schedules overlap conveniently so I can unlock it for you..."I don't want to stick around later than I have to just to unlock it when you're done classes, kinda thing"), and you'd probably rather get to know me before entrusting me with your bike.

I left my crappy canadian tire bike outside the student center overnight once (locked), and it was gone in the morning. Why someone would waste the effort and legality of stealign a bike worth $30 is beyond me.

One thing I've noticed is that the bicycle lock up thingies aren't nailed to the ground a lot of the time. I can imagine people like moving those around at night to mess with people and make them think their bikes are gone.

That would take a lot of effort if there are multiple bikes though...
