Dropping a course/fixing marks that are required for year 2...
Hiya, first time poster

I was wondering if I could get some advice. My goal for level II was going to be Honors Biochemistry, but it looks like I'm not going to make the requirements. My current CA is 5.6, with a 5 in chem 1A03, a 2 in Calc (ouch). This term I'm not doing too well in chem 1AA3...

So, my questions are these:

1. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to do too well in chem 1AA3. If I drop it (the deadline is tomorrow!) and take it in summer school, how will this affect what program I go into for year II? Far as I know, the deadline for selecting programs for year 2 comes far before I would get any mark for summer school. Would I have to consider getting into a different program and shadowing the courses for biochem, then switch majors?

2. If I take courses in summer school (I plan on taking Chem 1A03, 1AA3, and redoing the math course, or maybe taking the easier version), will those marks be looked at on my application to my chosen major, or an average of the redone course and the old mark?

In short, I want to fix up my grades to get into my program, I'm just not sure how this is going to work out.

Thanks in advance!

Being a first year student myself, I won't be able to provide you with accurate information. I think your best best is to see an academic counsellor. I'm pretty sure they will be able to answer all your questions and to give you advice as to what your choice should be. Seeing how you've paid for these services, why not use it to your advantage to get reliable information?

Then why say anything at all? I wish everyone would just be as informative and helpful as me.

If your average is good enough but you lack (at most two of) the required courses, they give you a conditional offer, where you can register in the program if you complete the course(s) in summer school. I don't know if/how it affects courses that you re-take, since offers will have already gone out before you have completed the course. And, even if you retake calc in summer school and get a 12, the 2 won't ever disappear, it will just get averaged with the 12. If your CA is a 5.6, you likely won't get a conditional acceptance. You need a CA of 6 just to get into an honours program, so unless you can get that, you will need to go into the three-year life science program and raise your average/shadow biochem as best you can, and reapply in second year.
