Just an average laptop is fine. The only two heavy duty applications that you'll be running in 1st year is probably Autodesk Inventor and MapleSim for 1CO3. (Engineering Design)

RAM: Even 4GB should be fine. (8GB is great)
Processor 2GHZ or higher optimally.
Disk space: go above 500GB
Great Laptops: Go for Asus laptops. (Bang for the buck, great quality), 2nd: Lenovo, 3rd: HP
