I am a huge ass apple fan, I own a mac. BUT apple is not for engineering. Most of the programs that you will be using will not be compatible with mac.

coming from an engineer.
Do not get a mac. minus the fact that apple is crap for its price, macs are just a pain to run the required programs u need for eng.
The most important thing u should be gettin is a good gfx card. u will be running inventor will takes quite a bit of gfx power if u dont want it to be uber slow etc etc. lots of ram would be good too. aim for a laptop around the 1k region

Technically you'll be in general engineering first year.
You join elec eng after 1st year.

Can we just have like a big button linking to a single thread for this topic? Seems like every week 2-3 of the exact same topic pops up

13" Macbook Pro. I would have been *EXTREMELY* disapointed with my choice had I gotten a pc. Also, you only need 13". 15" is overkill IMO.
EDIT: And yeah this topic comes up a lot. And we all say the same things each time too!

If you're a real engineer, you don't get a laptop. You get a desktop. No exceptions.

Personally I think the 13 inch is too small. My wrists get sore if I have to use that keyboard for more than a few minutes, but that's just me.
I also think the 17 inch is too big.
That being said, it all depends on what you like.

Truth told, you don't need a powerful computer.
I jewed out and survived the year with a handy down netbook, and nothing else.
Printer/scanner? Leeched off housemate.
autodesk? CAD? Student computer lab at KTH building
Maple math program? john hodgin building computer lab.
Programming? same place.
only reason why you need a desktop is to play games and watch anime.

Well if you want to do your work from 7-9 PM, get a laptop.
PC weren't designed to play games and watch anime.

This question is asked a lot. If you're spending 2k on a laptop for school, that's overkill. If you plan on gaming and stuff, then okay, but 2k is still a lot for a good gaming laptop. As for the PC vs. Mac deal, get whatever you're most comfortable using. Macs are only good if you know how to use them to their full potential, if you're just getting it for the "look" then you're just wasting your money. But again, it all comes down to personal preference and what you're used to using.
Also, if you haven't done so, join us on facebook in the McMaster Engineering '15 group: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=...615825094&ap=1
You'll find a lot of upper years (also a FAQ) that are willing and more than happy to answer your questions.
