Scholarships used to only be renewable once...then for one or two years, they made it over all four years, and then they cut back to once.
Dunno, it seems more like it was unfair for those two years, than for the rest of time. Haha.

Without trying to sound too conceited, I'm pretty sure I was, or at least tied for the top spot.
As far as my other scholarship goes, I believe it's just given to the top x% of each faculty; You can read more about it specifically on the awards page in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Wow, that's impressive! Anyway, hope there are some other perks at Mac that don't make me regret choosing it over Queen's or UT besides its abundant scholarships

Last year I got "THE DR. HARRY LYMAN HOOKER SCHOLARSHIPS" because of academic standing, and that was worth $1500.
This year I'm so far eligible for THE DR. HARRY LYMAN HOOKER SCHOLARSHIPS again and THE DONALD HART SCHOLARSHIP worth $400. They were both automatic too (I didn't apply for them).

Greg, when you're done with your brain, could I have it please?
I'll take good care of it and take it for a walk each day.

Only five years ago they were retainable only for 2 years of study. I think the 4-year renewal thing was more of a trial program and it looks like they've cut back again.

Looks like my year was lucky then with the 4 year scholarships!

Back to the president's scholarship and renewing and such. It's really seeing people I knew who had 95%+ in high school... and couldn't even retain their entrance scholarship after first year... *sigh, I guess alot of people really don't take the highschool -> university transition seriously enough..

It's not even about taking the transition well, it's just that high school is such a different atmosphere, and people who get 95% there don't necessarily deserve it due to teachers with laid back marking schemes/allowing people to hand in things months past the due date etc.

Yeah its not just that though. I would say in A LOT of cases, high schools just do not prepare you for university! In a lot of my first year classes there were people who were still struggling with how to write an essay.
Grade inflation does not help at all like Greg said. Anyone coming into university with a +95% average is going to expect a certain amount of ease. You really have to fight for that 80% to maintain your scholarship, it's not going to be a cake walk.

It's not only learning in highschool but it's the whole social atmosphere in university. I was honestly very lucky to retain my scholarship. I probably don't deserve it compared to people that worked there asses off and couldn't renew.

I have a quick question.
For first year entrance scholarships does the money have to go towards tuition or do they also give out cheques?

If you have tuition outstanding, it goes towards it. Otherwise you can get a cheque for the amount.

It would've been better for it to stay on your account for future use XD

You don't have to request a cheque. But you can generate some interest (regardless how small) by withdrawing it. Time value of money!
