First Year's Questions...full courses...
Hey, I'm a first year student starting Mac in September, just had a few simple first year questions. If anyone can give help in answering these questions that would be a big help.

Question 1: When registering for my classes on Solar for the first time I wasn't able to get a course I was planning on minoring in, due to the fact that it was already full. What can be done about this?? Do I have to take a first year course next year?? Or is there a waiting list???

Contact the department, keep trying until drop/add deadline. There is nothing wrong with taking a first year course in second year. There aren't any waitlists either.

We don't have a waiting list set up at Mac, so unfortunately your only option is to keep checking SOLAR to try and get in. You can also attempt to get a spot opened up for you by talking to the prof, or the course organizer/department, if you have a good reason. How effective this is can vary though- some courses will open up a spot just for asking, but with others the limits are much more firm because of lab sectioning. In general though, wanting to minor in a subject isn't enough for them to consider it a need.

Don't worry too much though! Spots will open up between now and September as people drop classes, or because people didn't meet their conditional offer. When timetables are released and people see they can get a Friday off by changing an elective (or similar situations) spots will open up. Just make sure you check as much as possible! For popular courses there will quite likely be others looking for a spot as well though, so watch out for that.

Hope that helps!

EDIT: Darn, outsped, lol.

Yes...when it opens up in August, you can basically stay on for a day or so and get yourself totally sorted out...that's how much people switch around.
