Yep, I think they've sent this out to all the students the original email went to. Considering that the main issue here to begin with wasn't the policy itself but the lack of timing and consultation, I think this in and of itself is a pretty good thing. If we're lucky the MSU and IRC may be able to do something over the coming year, but even if they can't at least it demonstrates to everyone that we as students *can* have an impact. Hopefully McMaster will be better about consulting the student body in the future.
Yays!

REMINDER TO INCOMING RESIDENCE STUDENTS: You can not bring your own fridge.
Effective September 2010, residence students are not permitted to bring personal refrigerators into the residence buildings. Students interested in having a refrigerator in their room can make arrangements with the University's contractor Coldex, for rental of a 3 or 5 cubic foot refrigerator during the academic year.
This policy ensures all refrigerators entering the residence buildings are properly cleaned, energy efficient and in good working order: this assists the University in providing a safe and healthy living environment in residence and contributes to the University's sustainability efforts.

Fridge Rental in Residence - Mandatory Rule
Are the students able to bring their own fridges if they are brand new (just purchased) and more energy efficiebt? I did look at past forums but I did not see anything more current than 2011... and that perhaps that the rules regarding the fridges may have changed since then...?

FAQ: Can I bring a fridge into res? Answer: NO. Students are not permitted to bring personal refrigerators into res. You (and your roommate) have to rent one from a company called Coldex. Cost ranges from $125 to $140, plus a $25 refundable cleaning deposit. The fridge is delivered to your room and picked up after you move out in April.

Obviously, sensible people would find this monopoly to be quite misguided. I'm sure that I could buy a small fridge, to keep, forever, for close to the cost of a year's rental. Most students expect to stay in school for longer than a year, I expect. The justification, that these rental fridges are clean and in working order, is something to be seen. Possibly they're just trying to keep out somebody's huge energy hog? Still, an outright prohibition on personal fridges in favour of a monopoly rental seems like over-kill for a possible small risk. I suppose that the University will receive a small royalty on the rentals, and that money will go to reduce tuition and improve computer services.

Agreed, the prohibition on fridges seems over the top in this case where the rental costs just as much to buy a brand new fridge and keep it forever. If the fees were low, say $30-40 for the year, then that would be a different story as the cost for renting would make sense.
If their only case is that fridges will be clean and in working order, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense given the fact that when students leave residence... they take their own fridge with them (if they had brought their own). They wouldn't leave it for the next person to use, all dirty or not working, etc.
So if a student brought his/her own fridge, of course it would be working. I'm not sure the logic there.

That bs about energy efficiency is just to make people feel like it's reasonable. They're only doing it for the money.
