Get Emergency Notifications Via Text Message

Security Services has been using a new system that allows all users who have registered to the Everbridge system to receive a message via email or SMS about any emergencies happening at McMaster.

Possible examples of emergencies include terrible weather and/or violence on campus that warrants a school closure.

All members will get a test message once an academic term. Members are also responsible for any chargers to their phone service providers that may result.

This is an opt-in option, which can be selected through MUGSI. For more information please see this link.

Already signed up for this on my BB. It's great to see this security feature being implemented.

Should be opt-out... not sure how they'd do that though. At least they're doing something.

Why Opt-Out and not Opt-In?

Because I think it's one of the more important things. Plus I think most people receive text messages for free. It'll make it so that even people that don't know about the emergency system to be in it.

It should be opt-out or McMaster should do a hell of a lot of advertising of it. I think McMaster would choose opt-out given those two options.

Jeremy already pretty much stated my thoughts exactly.

People should be forced to say "I don't want to be informed in the event of an emergency" and not asked to participate instead. It would likely save lives in the event of a serious problem and I guarantee that on this campus - filled with sheltered students who don't care about anything but themselves - there will be thousands who don't even have a clue that this system exists. Better to include all the phone numbers in the school database and force people to take thier number off.
