How hard would transferring into engineering be?
Hi
I've been accepted to physical sciences as well as some engineering programs at other schools like queens and Ottawa, but not from McMaster. I really want to go to McMaster for engineering because of the location and atmosphere.

I was wondering if it would be hard to transfer from physical sciences into engineering. I wouldn't mind having to stay an extra year either. (=
or would the smarter decision be to go to a different school for engineering and try to transfer to mac next year

thanks!! (=

Transferring from physical sciences or from another engineering program to mcmaster engineering is going to be difficult.
First year is usually a new atmosphere to students and there's no guarantee that you're going to get a high average. I think you need around a 9(B+) to transfer to engineering, which is doable but not easy to get in first year.

If you really want engineering it's probably a better choice to go to another uni that accepted you. That way, at least you are studying something you like.
If you really want to do engineering at mac you can go back for a 5th year in high school and retake few courses to raise up your average.
Good luck!

Also, DEFINITELY speak to both departments at Mac about this and see what they think. They know all the rules and they've probably dealt with the question before.

Good luck and congrats on having three great options

Hi, I'm switching from Life Science into Engineering 1 (You must start again from year 1, so you'll have to stay an extra year). As Jim1 stated, you do need a 9 in order to get in, so I was told by the Academic Advisor. My average was 11. something (close to 12) and I was able to transfer about 5 courses. Just note that the Physics 1B03 and 1BB3 cannot be transferred into Engineering. I've been told that the Engineering program has a heavy workload as compared to other programs. I'd recommend you take Physical Science and get use to the university setting as its not as heavy on the workload and you'll be prepared to endure Engineering life the following year. Contact me if you have any questions.

Marty, you're better off doing 1st year in Engineering in Queens or Ottawa and then transferring to Mac. That way you'll get most of your credits transferred and you'll be studying relevant things in first year.

Having said that, it's unlikely that you will transfer from another university after first year, most likely because you'll be settled there (friends, locations, etc).
