important question regarding not high enough marks
Let's say that my friend applies to McMaster for environmental sciences and gets in.
But, first year she doesn't do so great and she is UNABLE to get into the molecular biology and genetics program 2nd year. What happens from there? What is she able to do?
Thank you

She can try to shadow the program. Tell her that if it happens to talk to an academic advisor.

It means doing the program without being in it.

You take the same courses as a person enrolled in the program, but you're technically not in the program. So, you'd have to apply to apply to the program after 2nd year in order to officially be in the program.
So say that you wanted to get into Honours Biology, but you didn't have the marks to get in. Second year you would take the same courses as someone who got into the program, but you technically haven't been accepted into the program yet, and thus have to reapply to the program after your second year. Kinda hard to explain, lol.

The above post is a pretty good explanation, if more information is needed you can talk to an academic advisor.

it says you need a gpa of 6.0 in your first year or whatever to get into molec bio and genetics... what is that as a percentage? 68?
And is that the only requirement?

You'd also need the listed prerequisite courses.

There is also a limited number of seats in the program. Last year you needed a much higher average than 6.0.

Well a 10 is 80, so a 7 is roughly 70-73, I think?

Yup. For some students its harder to attain than others. It depends on how well your high school actually prepared you for university, your study habits, your time management skills etc.
