Internet Provider Recommendations
Hey guys,

So it's gonna be the first year my friends and I are living off-campus and we were just wondering what internet provider we should sign up with.

We're trying to stay away from the main ones like Rogers and Bell because of their prices and caps. There are about 7 of us living in the house and we're probably gonna download quite a bit.

I've heard good things about Teksavvy but I've also been reading about unavailability and a couple complains from people about slower speeds in Hamilton.

Any help, reviews or recommendations would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Tek Savvy is best bang for buck. Cogeco is good for speeds. Other notable companies which I've heard of but not know much of are Shaw/Primus

Primus is good. http://www.primus.ca/en/residential/...SL-Ontario.htm

The 38.95 base plus router rental (5 dollars) and a secondary fee based on our location, my home's bill comes to 56.81 a month, which between 6 people is less that 10 dollars a month for unlimited internet. The speed might not be the fastest but I've never had a problem with things loading or downloading slowly with all 6 of us online at the same time. It's unlimited so you don't have to worry about reaching the cap and paying crazy prices for every gig you go over. Not to mention their customer service is fantastic (especially after dealing with Cogeco :I ). Give them a call and see if they offer dry loop in your area. They run through Bell's lines so anywhere Bell runs shouldn't have a problem getting service.

Hope that helps.

Well . Tek savvy is the best. But I have been with bell for years paying 70 a month , this year I called bell and threatend To cancel , so they let me talk to their loyalty department and now I pay only 33 per month , yes 33 for fibe 12 (fast) with 160 GB !

teksavvy or GTFO.

Seriously best bang for buck and good service. (I don't believe they do cable internet in some area of hamilton so be careful)

What download speeds are you TekSavvy users getting? My room mates and I were looking at them, but were concerned it just wouldn't be fast enough. IE, could you stream 1080p youtube without buffering? Or regular 360/480p youtube for that matter?

Thanks guys! TekSavvy sounds like the best option so far then.

Surely looking into Shaw too. Anyone know much about Shaw? They seem to have really great speeds! Primus seems a little too slow for 7 people to use at the same time.

Keep 'em recommendations coming guys

I looked into Teksavvy, looks really good but I wasnt sure about the 200GB they offer, I had no idea if that was too much or too little for a house of 6, so I went with Acanac for unlimited downloads. First year was cheap, like $23 per month plus $8 dry loop, after a year they bump you up to 30 something, still good. Speeds are good, but when all of us get on it gets slow. And someimes cuts totally out, but that could be the really cheap router I bought - haven't looked into it yet.
Still happy with Acanac

The 3 main ones are cogeco, teksavvy and bell. Shaw is super good if you can get it but its mostly only on the mountain.

There are two options:
Cogeco: wicked fast, expensive, cable
Never buffer ever pretty much but we have the 100m/s speed. No slow downs or throttling

TekSavvy: slow, cheap, dsl
havnt used but is still best bang for buck. They use bells lines which can be horribly slow at times though (2-6 mb/s average)

bell is not an option. just dont do it

It also depends what you and your housemates do a lot. Do you guys download a lot? Watch high def streams? Torrent? Honestly I think the safest bet is to just buy a more expensive internet package since it is split up between 7 people.

Were you on their 6 Mbps plan or the 12 Mbps one? and how were the speeds?

A rough estimate that I use. Any advertised speed converts to 10% of it in conversion of MBPS. So a 12 Mbps will give u about 1.2 MB/s not factoring in location and other stuff

If 1 byte = 8 bits, i thought you just divide whatever the advertised speed by 8 to get download speed...
