That enough reasons for you? Stop assuming that people only buy Macs because of good marketing. Its not true.
Also, don't get a desktop. Being able to take your laptop to study rooms in res is very useful.

My 15.6" Acer laptop was $500 new from bestbuy it has
-LED back-lit LCD screen, very good contrast ratio and colours
-I can run 6 hours on battery with Intel HD graphics or game on GT330M
-Full Size Keyboard (though I wish they didn't make the shift key so small)
-My Acer laptop also support multi touch, on the pad and on the touchscreen (can zoom in/out, scroll/pan, two finger swipe for forward/backward/scroll)
-Acer has amazing tech support, my friend scratched the motherboard, suffice to say don't use a knife to open a cover that is stuck... he sent it back to Acer and they fixed it under warranty in a week despite him clearly opening it and damaging it, which should of voided warranty I might add
Here's a review of a laptop in the same series, though i can't seem to find my specific laptop as it was discontinued.
Also I'm not assuming people only get macs because of marketing, as I posted before, I made observations and inquiries into the matter and have come to the conclusion that many people seem to be heavily influenced by those around them using mac products mostly thanks to Apples method of product release and design, just like our original poster who saw alot of macbooks in thode library and inquired as to whether he should purchase one.
And a desktop vs laptop is a life style choice, if you don't need the power of a desktop for gaming/rendering than a laptop should be fine, but a netbook is more convenient to carry around and more comfortable to use in those squishy little lecture hall seats. So a netbook+desktop combo solves more problems than having a single powerful laptop, unless you really need to game/render on the fly, which some people do, especially people working with auto cad, 3d max and adobe CS programs.
