hp is very very good...i really like their new design..with the pattern and high gloss finish..i want to buy an hp...but the core 2 duo is out of my budget...ill have to settle for a cpre 2 duo dell..( dell looks boring when compared to hp)..but they are encashing on the design..thats why they are much more exp then the other brands... do buy a hp if it is in ure budget

Has anyone used the Fujitsu 4220 tablet? I am looking into getting one of them with XP. I have heard they are very durable and will last the four years of school.

Both HP's and Dells are nice.

@Celine
Tablets are pretty cool, I've never used one but they look really comfortable... being able to spin it around to write on.

One of my housemates got one last year. She likes it, but found it a bit of an adjustment at first in comparison to a normal computer.

For a person in art doing sketches, it could be great to use as a sketchpad. But I dont know if it's all that useful for a regular user... unless you're planning on writting out your notes using the tablet touchpad. If you have a tablet, why hand write the notes on the screen when you could type them?

What other advantages make tablets cool? I've never tried one

It's good for making flow charts, because you can write the text but also draw lines and whatnot.

Toshiba Rules All...
I have heard a lot of bad about Dell and especially MDG. I just picked up a Toshiba Qosmio G40, from cdw.ca (cheap, reliable supplier, go there). Upgraded myself to 4gB of RAM, easy as pie. Came with 17' screen, Harman/Kardon speakers/subwoofer built in, HD-DVD burner, NVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card, santa rosa processor, 250gB hard drive, TV Tuner, and more. No problems yet, great laptop. I have also tried Toshiba's satellite line, and they are superb. Toshiba makes solid laptops that have a large range in price, so there's something for everyone. The only drawback would have to be the inclusion of vista, which I may kickback to XP sometime soon...

Still, Let's Hear It For Asian Technology!!!

Ooh, also, for extras like carrying-cases, check futureshop/bestbuy for what you want, but then PRCE HUNT! I found a targus backpack at futureshop that I loved, but when I checked three stores down at staples, the same bag was abot $35 cheaper. Be careful, because prices can differ greatly store to store.

Wouldn't that make the 4GB of RAM an overkill? I read somewhere that a 32-bit operating system like Windows XP can't read up to 4 GB unless you do some registry and BIOS editing.

4GB of RAM on a 32bit operating system is overkill, you should be fine with 2GB with 32bit Vista. Also for those of you looking at Dell, check out the Latitude line instead of Inspiron, they are targeted for business users but they have some nice features, are free of junk software, and are of a higher quality build. Check out the Latitude D630, with the extended battery options you should be able to get 6-7 hours battery life. The XPS M1330 is also nice, for those who want a HDMI port and a huge hard drive.

Be careful with the Toshibas, my sister got one for school and she's only had it for about 2 years and she already hates it. She's had problems with many different parts of it and has had to send it to get repairs done to it many times. And being without a computer for a few weeks while in college isn't something to look forward to.
