Yup. You are allowed to recharge your laptop batteries during class. Most lecture halls have outlets around the side walls or near the back of the room. For example, MDCL 1305 has some seats at the very back of the room (the highest point in the room) which are kind of like you are sitting in front of a counter top. There are outlets in these counter tops that let you plug in your laptop. Also, one of the more renovated rooms, MDCL 1105, has an outlet on the top of each student's desk! Not too mention and buzzer and speakerphone on the desk for each student to participate in the class! But those speakerphones and microphones are not for first years, to my knowledge.

I also got a thinkpad t61 recently and I really like it! It has Vista, which is really new for me since I’ve only ever used XP before but it’s a very pretty interface. Thinkpad lasts and is less prone to crashes which is why I bought it, plus my dad already has one that I’m familiar with J ($900-1000 when on sale)

Each laptop should have a kensington lock hole (a hole with a "k" symbol) at the back or the side. So when you leave your laptop unattended, you can just stick the lock in to the hole and wrap it around something to keep it there. But you should lock it somewhere that cannot be moved. (don't lock it onto table legs or anything that can be lifted up.)

Well Samsung is a decent brand. Nice looking laptops, average build quality. If you MUST buy I Samsung and it's for university use. I'd look into the Q320. Decent processor, good battery life, discrete graphics, and most of all, small and light Plus it looks decent and the specs will be more than enough for most things (Gaming, video processing, etc, not included...)

And I think it looks pretty cool too Future Shop has the model for $1299. Which is a decent price for what your getting, I guess, but there are better deals out there.

Samsung has been making laptops for years now, they just never arrived "officially" in the Canadian market. You could find them at some importers.
