life science 2nd year programs
im debating between honours life science and honours biochem.
i heard that if you don't choose any program, then you go straight into honours life sciences? like as a default.. is that true?

anyways,
im considering med school and i was just wondering if i would be better off with honours life sci or biochem.
truth is, i dont know yet, if i really love pipetting, biotech, stuff for biochem.. i want to give it a try, and i know i didn't HATE it first year labs, but i didn't love them either.

as for honours life science, i can have more electives, but if i do end up not getting into medschool, theres not much i can do with this degree., and pharmacy is not an option for me.

id like any opinions. thank you!

Judging from what you've said, it sounds like you have quite an interest in biochem.
And based on that, I would say you should go into biochem. Because if you have an interest in something, you should pursue it. It'll make the next couple of years a lot more enjoyable.
I heard from some people i know that went into hon. life sci because they wanted the electives, that it starts out being a great idea, but they end up hating it, because they're in a program with absolutely no structure and they don't have very many doors left open.

go for biochem, see if you like it! that way you're not missing out on doing something you would end up really enjoying.
if you don't, it's really easy to switch out into life sci (or anything else).

I agree. Go with Biochem since you seem to be quite interested in it. And it's easier to switch out of Biochem into Life Sci than from Life Sci into Biochem because of the required courses.

I will be starting med school this september and really, what it comes down to is choosing a program that you can do the best in (of course). So, go with your interests and work hard..Try Biochem and if worse comes to worse than you can always switch into Life Sci. As OP stated, it is easier to go from Biochem to life sci than Life Sci to Biochem...So you wont really be "behind" in the sense of credits cause most of the Biochem requirements will be accepted as life sci requirements.

Thanks alot.
I still dont think i have a soft spot for biochemistry. (pcr, gene expression, pipetting , research).

i think i will stick with life science.
do you mind telling me what progra you were in during your undergrad?

Everyone pretty much said it. Keep in mind though, that it'll be easier to switch from Biochem to Life Sci in third year than the other way around because of the required courses and such.
