Life Sciences 1 Courses
Hi, I'm goin into the life sciences 1 program in September 2012. I was planning on taking the following courses:
BIOLOGY 1A03
BIOLOGY 1M03
MATH 1LS3
MATH 1LT3
MATH 1B03
CHEM 1A03
CHEM 1AA3
PHYSICS 1B03
PHYSICS 1BB3
PSYCH 1X03
I was palming on studying the biochemistry or molecular biology & genetics program in year two. Do you think this is an appropriate choice of courses?
How heavy do you think the work load will be?

Looks pretty normal, you'll find that most people in Life Sciences I have very similar schedules.

it will be harder than other life scis. most life scis dont take either of the 2nd physics or math 1lt3/1aa3 or math 1b03. psych isnt even necessary for what you want and i could see it being extra work for you in first term as it was for many who took it.

you easily have the required courses for both those programs and most others too. you could even go into physics with those courses if you wanted to.

yea they say that but once you get here, first year is just about having the prereqs for the programs you wish to go in to. you can come and in the first week of school you can change psych to something else even if youre in life sci. i wish i knew of that.

Looks good to me, a little on the heavy side (I for instance didnt take the second physics/maths) but this is definitely manageable, if you work hard and make time to relax with friends, you will be fine Something to think about though would be taking Math 1B03, just because it's recommended doesnt mean it's a must!

This was pretty much what wanted to take in first year too, with the exception of PHYSICS 1BB3. Overall, it was pretty tough trying to manage all these courses, but that's because I slacked off a lot :/
Just try to keep up-to-date with the material and you'll do fine. If you have a passion for math. Half the courses you take are going to be a joke.

Thanks for the advice! But it does say that MATH 1B03 and PHYSICS 1BB3 are recommended. If I take those courses, will it increase my chance in getting into the 2nd year programs?

Not at all, and if you don't do well in them then it will hinder your chances.

Also, I'm getting a 95 in grade 12 calculus right now, so hopefully the maths won't be too difficult?

high school math is veryy different from university math, contrary to how bio and chem courses integrate content from high school.
linear algebra would be the continuation of vectors and the first calculus course would be the continuation of calculus. the content from the second calculus course was completely new, which kinda made me suffer; but then again, i took math 1a03/math 1aa3. math 1ls3/1lt3 should be similar but easier.

Your high school grades can't really be used to determine how well you'll do in your university courses. Just work hard when the time comes and you'll be fine.

math 1ls3 is a joke. everyone i know who took 1lt3 did well in it too. if you wanna go to med school then it is good to have a 2nd physics since it keeps more options open. most life scis end up taking physics 1bb3 in later years or summer. youre schedule is pretty tough imo. id drop math 1b03 and maybe even 1lt3 since they arent really needed. first term i would take math, chem, bio, psych (if you really want to take it, it was one of my harder courses), and physics. see how you do in these courses and how well you like them and then decide if you wish to take another math and physics.

Well 1LT3 and 1BB3 are both only offered second term, if the OP decides not to continue in math/physics he can always drop them and change courses before second semester starts no problem

Okay, then I might not take MATH 1LT3. is it a prerequisite for anything though?
