McMaster Residence 2016: Answers To Common Questions

For #McMaster2020 incoming students, a lot of questions around residence come up that are usually asked such as your chances of getting into the residence that you selected as your first pick, or how McMaster matches students.... because of course, you're curious who that potential roomie might be!

Here are some answers to common questions:

What are my chances of getting the rez and room I wanted?
It all comes down to luck of the draw. As Mac Housing explains: "A computerized lottery is used to determine the order in which residence rooms are assigned. This process takes into consideration, but does not guarantee the preferences you list on your application. As each student is assigned, the computer checks to see if the first preference listed on the application form is available. If so, the student is assigned to that room. If not, the computer checks the next preference. This continues until the student is either assigned to one of their preferences, or in the event that none of the preferences are available, assigned to another bed space. During this process, the computer also checks to see if the student has applied for any lifestyle-themes (i.e substance-free) and/or whether they requested a roommate. Your profile question responses on the online application are also used to determine your placement with other students."

How do I know if I am 'guaranteed' into rez or not?
Those accepted to McMaster who meet the Residence Admissions cut-off of 81% for 2016-17 are guaranteed a residence space provided they meet the application and deposit deadlines.

What if you don't like who you're paired with?
Give the person a shot before you judge them. It is not possible to change your assignment.

How do I find out about my room assignment?
You will receive confirmation of your room assignment via email sometime in July (usually late July). You can then log-in to your residence application by going to https://residence.mcmaster.ca and view your room assignment under the 'Application Status' section. You WILL be able to communicate with your assigned roommate. You can view your roommate's first name by visiting your application status page of the online Residence Portal. You can email a message to them by clicking on the Send Message button. Be sure to include your contact information so they can reply to you directly.

Do I get to pick WHO I want to have as my roommate?
McMaster allows you to request the name of 1 PERSON you want to be roommates with. However, that person also needs to request you by name as well (reciprocal) otherwise you won't be paired together.

Traditional, apartment and suite-style rez... what's the difference between them?
Traditional residences are different than apartment and suite-style residences because they have single, double or triple rooms, with lounges, washrooms, kitchenettes, laundry and meeting facilities that are shared by everyone on the floor, wing, or house. All of the residences on campus, excluding Bates and Mary E. Keyes, are traditional style. Mandatory meal plans apply to all residences.

What should I BRING to McMaster residence?
Are you allowed to decorate your room?
Yes, you can 'decorate' but it's limited to only things you can take down or clean up easily when you leave. You are not permitted to damage or alter any part of your room by drilling holes, nailing, painting, etc.

Can you cook in your room?
While it might be tempting to bust out the George Foreman grill in your room, cooking is NOT allowed in rooms. You may use the kitchenette on your floor to make snacks as long as you provide your own cooking and eating utensils. Suite-style rooms have a shared kitchen area in their suite of rooms.

Are you allowed guests to stay over?
Yes, you can. You have to escort your guest into the building (as buildings are locked and you need your key card to access). Friends CAN stay overnight, as long as your room mate(s) are cool with it, but there is a limit to how long they can stay. See the policy here.

Does rez have a curfew?
There are no curfews in residence, but there are designated quiet hours. If your room mates are too loud while you're trying to study, there are quiet study areas around campus you can go to. Check out the libraries, or the Student Centre (MUSC).
