Isn't 600 really low, because if I remember correctly 2400 is the max score now.

600 per section, or 1800 total.
Though that is still rather low....

I don't quite like the term idiot. I prefer to say "people-that-are-better-off-without-a-degree" because university isn't for everyone. If someone does not get into uni, it might be a sign that they won't like university and that they won't need it. They are better off learning what suits them best and find out where they belong such that it feeds their spirit.

Not saying idiots do not exist, just making a point about those not getting in because school is not what life is all about as evidenced by many successful (not defined by objective means such as money) people without degrees.

By 'idiots' I think the idea of a person who is lazy, annoying and generally a waste of life is what they're referring to. People who aren't good at school aren't idiots, it's the kind of attitude that people are referencing.

People who go to school just because they think that's what they 'have to do' (get the uni/college 'experience') are idiots in my opinion. I heard something really interesting and it was that: "Instead of blowing x thousand dollars on school, some people would be better off just using that money to travel".

By "engineering school" I thought you just meant the engineering streams @ McMaster, and not the faculty as a whole.

The bad about standardized tests is that realistically taking a test and one session to evaluate your knowledge isnt that accurate. The good thing about these is that those who do well in sat's will prob do well in test/exams and lower fail rate/higher avgs

I believe high school marks are getting higher. When I was in Grade 12 three years ago, almost all of my core classes (math, physics, chemistry, etc.) had course medians of somewhere in the 70s.
My brother now, who goes to the same school, is graduating this June. I looked at his report card earlier this year, and I was like wtf why are all the medians in the 80s now?
Back in my year, the average to get into Eng I was 82, but now i see it's 87.
Somehow I don't believe people are getting smarter though, because once into uni, everyone gets 60s XD (in eng at least).

jim1, murphyh like this.

I know so many idiots who got in, but if it was 80%+, they wouldn't have even been accepted.

+ it just feeds into the idea that "oh hum./soc sci is gonna be easy so you only need a 75 to get in lawl"
like can we not.

I see where your concern is coming from...but some students who may only have a 75% average in highschool may actually be great thinkers and they need university to guide them. Allowing them to get into Humanities or Social Science they can narrow down their interests and move toward studying for their career. My grades didn't pick up until I found what I really enjoy/ what I'm good at. It's just a perspective thing I guess.

I 150% agree with this completely. Only going in to second year, and I will not argue for a second that my average wasn't inflated. Sure I was smart and worked hard, but I didn't deserve that high of an average. I think the issue is that a lot of students are taking summer school and e-learning courses to super-inflate their grades for fear of not getting in to programs. And since everyone is doing this, it's really, really inflating the averages. I mean this is getting ridiculous.
Though I don't think solely basing entrance off of SATs is a good idea, as there are a lot of potential issues (test anxiety being a big one), I think something needs to be done, because the standards across Ontario are so different it's ridiculous.
