Its not mean, it's based on his stats in the playoffs, and playing for Team Canada. He underproduces every time.
As a rookie (and the #1 draft pick), in the playoffs, 6 games, 0 points; his last year in Boston, as their captain, 7 games, 0 points. Only twice in his career has he hit a point a game in the playoffs, and is around 0.6 points per game in his playoff career. Not what you'd expect from a "superstar" or a leader.
Internationally, It's the same. One good year in 2005, and every other year he's sucked: 2 points in 7 games this year, 3 points in 6 games in '06, 6 points in 6 games in '02, and 2 points in 6 games in '01.
If he does get into the hall of fame, he'll be right along side Joe Mullen and Bernie Federko, in the "Guys who don't belong here but we needed to fill another slot on the ballot" wing. Not saying he's not a good player. He was a #1 draft pick, and has earned his way in the league after a slow start. But for not performing when his teams need him, he gets a lot more credit than he deserves, imo.
