Online Games Troubles Connecting
Ok, when I was in residence (back in October, damn Brandon Hall!) I found it was incredibly difficult to connect to online games. Games like COD 4, CS:S, UT3, tons of valve games, and more. I have been off campus for a while now and am going back in January. Just wanted to know if these problems still existed. It is really annoying when you can't join any server out there :(. Thanks for any info!

(If you have this problem as well post about it, and any workarounds)

UTS has a firewall.
Nothing you can do really.

You can try using MacConnect (the wireless around campus), it has different firewall rules than the one for residences. Some games don't work well on res, but work fine on the wireless, while others work better in residence.

Gah, it is quite lame how they have strict firewalls for all of us. Can't see why they just don't have good firewalls on any computers needing protecting rather than the entire board blocked. But, I guess I will just have to deal with it. Anyone know if EvE is blocked? Also I am kinda saddened because I don't think Left 4 Dead will work all that well. Oh well I guess. There to learn, not to play :p haha. Thanks for the info though.

find some old routers, set up a tcp+udp relay to your house connection.

for udp: http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Syste...wd-36950.shtml
for tcp: http://quozl.netrek.org/tcpxd/

2 routers running openwrt, one at home and one at res. i dont have the equipment to test it, but it should work.

the lag spikes look more like routing problems rather than a firewall, since 129.186.89.83:27016 (CS:S) works fine 24/7 (as do some others in quebec).

UTS has a campus wide firewall for the best interest of you, it protects your computer no mater where you connect, from outside attackers. If any computer inside the firewall got attacked, it would become a vulnerability for all computers at mcmaster (also why we have CleanAccess Agent). Unfortunately, most online gaming requires ports to be open on the firewall (which would in turn, allow attackers as well).

Like someone mentioned already, the easiest alternative is to play over the campus LAN, which is blazing fast for games anyways! or join MLC

i really gotta get my CS 1.6 dedicated server on residence online eh.. hmm...i also just got another box for a CS Source server as well...

if the game supports socks, set up a socks5 proxy at home. as long as the game relays udp packets over it, all should be well. if not, then google around for a udp over tcp wrapper.

i know its possible with cod4 (in config_mp).
