Orgo Summer
Hi, does anybody have experience with organic chemistry (first year) at Western University? I've heard it's relatively easier to take this course over the summer at Western... Any input?

Any course in the summer will be easier since you only have 1 course, not 5 to focus on. But you do have to stay on top of it all, since the entire course is like barely 8 weeks. I don't personally know anyone who took it Western though, and I really doubt anyone on here did. Are you planning on taking it there because of living at home, or just because you heard it's easier =/?

If you live around there go for it, but if not, just take it here - no reason commuting that far for one course, even if it is orgo.

Orgo at western is a joke. My roommate took it and all their exams/midterms are multiple choice... and trust me- that makes orgo a LOT easier...

Oh wow, that does make a difference.. Although I don't think we can really judge.. Maybe our MC questions are easier than theirs? Anyhow, I wish I lived in London now DX

yea.. i guess... but it being all MC means no drawing mechanisms and not actually having to remember the reagents used, if you have the answer infront of you atleast you can guess right.
I would def. recommend taking orgo at western!
and yea... living at western would be pretty awesome (orgo wise) haha, but dr.brook is awesome! <3

How is Orgo at Mac over the summer ? Are the tests also M/C? Is it easier than taking it during the normal school year?

I took Orgo at mac last summer and found it to be a great course - it was taught by Terri Gullon (she's the lab coordinator) and she really does a GREAT job (the university should let her teach it year round in my opinion). Her tests and exams were really fair (40% MC and 60% written) - if you stayed on top of the material and went to tutorial, etc, you could do really well. The only thing is you pretty much have to give up 3 months of summer. You have 3 hour lectures 2 times a week, plus a 3 hour lab every week, and an optional 2 hour tutorial. All of the homework and practice questions on top of that really eat up a lot of your time (I didn't work until after the course was over - I basically ate, slept, and did orgo...)

Yeah, i'm not from London, I'm actually from Toronto, so it would be like finding a place to stay... I mean is it WORTH it. My sister advised me to do it... But I can't rely on her as she did this 7 years ago lol

I've also heard York has a relatively 'easier' orgo program for the summer, which would make it easier for me (living at home and just commuting).... but i wouldn't mind staying at Western either... Also, does anyone know about the length of the program?

Lol well to be fair I wouldn't advise it, it's not extremely difficult if taken in the summer (at Mac), and if taken during the year (assuming your other courses aren't too difficult) you should be okay too.

You should really be asking yourself how much work you are willing to put in. If you are willing to work at it, then you can still get 12s by taking it during the regular school year.
If you're set on taking it in the summer though, then you should look ahead and see if you can juggle both work and orgo. You may have to sacrifice working full-time during the summer, and this is a big deal. There are people who work full-time, take orgo, and still pull 12s in the summer.
Again, don't expect it to be a bird course. It can be tricky at times.
