you may also try this:

but at your own risk...one of the comments hint that it might work with other vendors' laptop containing the same drive

tell me when you plan to throw it though :p

edit: wait a bit, I've found drivers of this thing from Toshiba and dell...so maybe hp is around the corner, btw..did you check if the drive is working at all? (by booting from a cd?)
