I remember seeing a post by Dr. Kim on ELM saying how it wasn't a free 5%, but rather just a reduction of 5% (i.e. originally, the total course is out of 100, but with Experimentrix, it's now out of 95).

Well, my TA had said a lot of times he had walked out thinking that he got owned on a psych test/exam, and he ended up doing well.
I think that may have happened for some people. It happened for me anyway - I didn't do as well as I would have liked, but I definitely did better than I thought I did after walking out.

If you read the course outline for 09/10 it says:

In addition to providing you with extra credit...
You must complete two hours of experiments, and no less, if you wish to earn the 5% credit toward your final grade.
