Second year courses. (psychology)
What to do for second year?
Unless finals are aced, I won't have a 6.0 or higher average. Some questions I have are: When does mcmaster kick you out of university? If you fail a lot of courses, how do you reapply to get revenge on the courses you've failed? This would be for a the faculty of science. I've heard there are ways that if you don't get into a second year course, you can mimic the courses taken, and then reapply the next year, is this true? Is there a way to switch programs in third year, for example if in second year I went into some psychology course that doesn't require over a 6.0 average (is there one?) could I switch into an honors psychology course for an honors degree in the third year of studies? Thanks much if you reply, all these questions have been bugging me. I'm want to get nerdy on this shit

hi,
  • i think if you have below a 3.5 you get the axe but you can apply for reinstatement (which is not guaranteed)
  • if you failed a course, I think you just apply for it on solar during registration
  • Mirroring: I think you are hearing about people who don't get into their program of choice when they first apply. To mirror, just take all the courses that are required for your program of choice (ones that are available to you or by requesting permission for restricted courses) and then apply for the program at the end of second year.
  • For psychology 2nd year courses, it appears that you need a 6 in psych 1x03/1xx3 for some of the restrictive courses NOT a 6 average. I wanted to switch into the biopsych at one point so I spoke to the academic councilor and apparently they are flexible with the marks for some of the published requirements marks (chemistry) so maybe they might be flexible with the psych. requirements if you do not get a 6 in each.
  • Yep you can definitely switch in if you meet the requirements
you should definitely speak to the adviser for psychology though. i hope this helps

Just to clarify, if you have 3.0-3.4 cumulative average, you are put on "academic probation" (i.e. you are in danger of getting kicked out of university but they'll let you stay to see if you can redeem yourself) for one reviewing period, which means one session I think. You are only "axed" if you have <3.0. That's according to this: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...ent/pg124.html

As for the psych requirements, you need an CA of 6.0 and a B- in each of Psych 1X03/1XX3, which is a 7. (http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...nt/pg1631.html ). But as previously stated by sinthusized, you get a chance to switch programs every year. If you don't get into your program of choice, I would definitely recommend mirroring it in order to make future transition into the program easier.
