I really doubt an automated car system will be implemented... there are just so many problems with one.

I don't think so. If every vehicle was controlled by computers, and every computer was able to communicate with all the computers in the cars near it, then there probably wouldn't be any problems. We'd probably get places faster since everything would be far more coordinated by a network of computers, rather than a bunch of angry humans.
It's already been proven that a car can drive itself with a GPS, some robot parts and a few sensors (there was some competition where some school made one drive itself 100 miles in some dessert in the US. These other guys almost made a motorcycle do it 0.o).
I mean, there is probably no chance this will happen any time soon, but isn't outside the rhelm of possibility. :p

There are so many problems with merging though. In order to merge cars you will have to slow some cars down which means the entire line will have to slow down. That is the main problem with roads these days. Even when instructed to drive a certain speed, not all drivers can maintain the speed, sometime they will go over a bit and have to slow down to maintain distance, sometimes they drive slightly slower which means everyone behind him also has to drive slightly slower. That's why when you are driving on the freeways and it's really slow, then all of a sudden it's clear without seeing anything, no crash, no closed lanes, etc.

That's why you get a computer network to control everything. Merges can be seen way ahead of time (assuming all vehicles are following programmed routes) and everything gets optimized.
Then again, if someone was to hack such a network, there could be one massive pileup :p

BMW created a robot 3-series car that managed to use GPS to "learn a race track" and then post a quick lap time. It was shown on Top Gear. That being said, the car would end up costing a million dollars because of the technology, so I'd say we're still a far ways off.

Don't worry, in a few years someone will inadvertently create Skynet, and it will make the cars for us. Only problem is they'll probably be running us over rather than taking us places

I'm aiming more towards a Ghost in the Shell kind of future instead of Skynet and the Terminators.
speaking of which, I listed to most of the GitS OST today and it was awesome.

Ya, but it's probably by angry lumberjacks; definitely not gangsters.

I went shopping for Car washing/detailing products at Canadian Tire today, and when I got out of my car, I noticed that I had parked over a $50 bill!
Shopping for free rocks!

WOW! That's really lucky! Maybe consider buying a lottery ticket with some of it
