Skip a Meal

Skip a Meal

Do you have money left on your meal plan? Instead of letting McMaster keep your money, do something good with it.

McMaster Meal Exchange, in association with the MSU Bread Bin and Hospitality Services, will be running the event ‘Skip a Meal’ between March 23rd and 27th. During which time they will be accepting donations from your meal card to be given to the Hamilton Food Share. Last year alone McMaster students left $21,000 dollars on their meal cards. Think of the impact that money could have had on the local Hamilton community!

As we all know Canada is currently in a recession and as tough as it is for everyone some of those hardest hit during recessions are social programs and the people who utilize them. This is a great opportunity for McMaster students to help make a difference and have a positive impact on the Hamilton community.

The Hamilton Spectator published an article about unused meal plan money on Thursday, it’s a quick read, check it out!

What: Skip a Meal
When: March 23rd-27th 11:30- 1:30, 5:00-8:00
Where: Commons Building

I don't know why Mac wouldn't let students donate the remainder of their meal plan (let's say to MAC Breadbin or Hamilton foodbank(s)) at the end of April.

It would a) make students look good b) make the school look good (because they're not pocketing the money) and c) make a HUGE difference.

Am I the only one who thinks this way?

They factor a certain amount of the plans into paying for staff/facilities/etc.. they let you donate what they don't use... The percentage they were willing to give per dollar was a lot smaller but the Meal Exchange ppl were able to fight for a slightly larger percentage it seems. I'm wondering if it would make more sense to buy whatever you can that's non-perishable and then donate that to the breadbin...

There's a very small and finite number of non-perishable foot items available, as it should mostly be found on the shelves at Mini Mac.

While it is a great idea, it probably wouldn't yield as much as the donations would. A combination of the two things is definitely the best way to go about it.

I think its a fanastic idea! I'm surprised Mac is allowing people to give it away rather than hoarding it all. They should hold this event again later this year, when people will be done with their meal plans
