Someone explain this to me
This has happened three times already and I have no idea why.

I get to a door at the same time as someone else (who is on the other side)
as the cool guy that I am I let them go first because Im in no rush, and then they turn to me and say sorry and continue walking.

Why do people say sorry when you let them go first? O.o

I have a tendency to do the same thing.I can't speak for everyone else but I just do it without thinking.I guess if I had to come up with a reason I'd be saying sorry for making them wait.Or it might seem rude to just rush by the other person so you could apologize for that.

Maybe you look pissed? I've never had somebody apologize to me for that.

And I guess it's reflex... I mean, I've bumped into someone and they apologized to me (and vice versa). We live in a society where nobody wants to offend, no matter how insignificant.

Short version: You're in Canada.

People say sorry for basically everything and I still don't know why. Even I catch myself doing this before I remember that I don't care about other people

Presumably they're apologizing for being in your way even though they have just as much right to be walking there as you do.

It's short for "I apologize for being a minor inconvenience to you as, because you allowed me to go through the door first, you have spent 2 seconds which would have otherwise been used for something productive."

Maybe try opening the door for them and let them through first. I usually do that. Makes things logistically easier.

..Bonus points if the other person is a girl

sorry can just mean so many things, like thanks, hello, i apologize, you're probably busier than i am so thanks for holding this... I tend to say it all the time, although not when having a door held for me. definitely if someone bumps into me though. i mean, i was probably in the way!

That is what I do, its not like I wait and watch them the whole time

hmm maybe they think im trying to walk through and they decide to barge in getting the upperhand and then apologize for doing that

I think I'd say "thank you" instead of "sorry." You have no reason to apologize, but I suppose it is nice (although it is exceedingly minor) to have someone let you go first.

You don't say thanks when people hold a door for you?

That's actually a huge thing that makes me rage hard. That's infuriating. >_<

Agreed, it's rude, and sometimes I look at them and ask, do I look like a [email protected]#!'ing doorman to you?

If you have nine Americans and one Canadian in a group, how d'you figure out which one's Canadian?

You step on their feet. The one who apologizes to you is the Canadian. :P
