I dont ahve it, but Ive looked into it a few times. If you have the extra money, it's definitely worth it. The last time I looked into it, it was through a corporate insurance plan at work, and the cost varies depending on the value of your stuff. Work up a rough estimate of the value of your stuff, and call a few places.

I really don't know how it works but when I lived in residence my parents looked into getting contents insurance for my room. When they called their insurance company about it the company said since they have house insurance the contents of their child's room away at University was covered under their plan.

I'm not sure what your situation is or if it would work differently since you're renting a room in a house but maybe if your parents have a house and insurance you could get some kind of coverage that way.

Again I'm not sure on the details, my parents just told me about it when I asked about getting my stuff I brought to residence insured.

I've never really bothered with insurance unless you have anything particularly valuable. For most students, their most expensive item is their laptops and the cost of insurance may be more than the laptop. As long as you make sure that your house is safe: lock doors and make sure windows are closed, you should be fine without insurance.
