Student Welness Center
hey everyone,

I couldnt find a post about the swc so i figured i would ask myself.

Can someone please tell me what happens at the swc? what is it like to see a counselor there?
I've never been to one and would like to know, because i feel like my problems are so little compared to others. I hear of people with depression (or something like that) go to talk to a counselor. But i just find myself stressed, sad, lazy, unmotivated, etc. and i feel like im not "eligible" to go see one. am I right or wrong?

thanks

You are completely eligible. Some people go in no with no idea that they have depression. Some go in and don't have any mental health issues, but so what? It's a service that your university fees go towards and it's there to help you. I don't know about the Mac counselor, but from my experience with the Mohawk one (at IAHS), I'd say it's definitely worth it.

The counselors are kind, you just go there and talk to them no matter how big or small you feel your problems may be.

You're a perfect candidate. They handle a wide degree of things and just letting it out can be just enough to de-stress... and there's always the option of working on things and coming up with strategies to deal with any issues you're having with motivation/anxiety/laziness. I've found group counselling to be beneficial too, but maybe just do a one-on-one first.
I've been to 1-on-1 and group and they're both very helpful. Motivation is a very tricky thing to deal with, but the root causes are addressable in some ways...

You can walk into b101 and make an appointment or just give 905-525-9140 ext: 27700 a call during daylight hours and set up an appointment (you don't have to know what specifically you're looking for, they'll figure out who to set you with).

I've been to the Wellness Centre myself a few times now. It's amazing. I go sometimes just because i find it comforting to talk to someone. And no one is not "eligible" to go to the student wellness centre so don't worry about that. If you're interested in trying it out, I would definately push you to do it

Ps. You have to go to the regular doctor's office to schedule an appointment first

Pretty sure you have to be a current student.

What do you mean by "regular doctor's office"?
You can schedule appointments directly with SWC; SWC includes what used to be "Campus Health" and the counselors and accessibility and all that.
You do not need to see a doctor before seeing a counselor or anyone from accessibility.
