basically, for someone to download from someone else, at least one person needs to be "active".. then the passive one will connect to the active one.. the problem with mcmaster is that there is a big firewall between off campus and on campus that doesnt let you be active on campus.. but if you were on campus, you could conect to anyone else on campus because there was nothing blocking you on the local network.. the server that you need to connect to that manages who is connected use to be on campus.. which means that no one from off campus can access it since the server needs to be "active".. now they moved the server to off campus so everyone can connect..

another problem is that when you download from on campus to on campus, you were not being capped on how much you download.. but now, whenever an off campus downloads from an on campus, the on campus will be only able to upload so much until mcmaster decides to cap that person..

sorry for my retarded explanation.. not really good at explaining.. lol
I'm with you, thanks! I just figured out how to open ports on my router anyway, so it should work. Have you done this? What's the speed like? Am I better to just stick to Torrents?

It all depends on what you are downloading.. older content tends to be unavailable to torrents.. and you also have to upload a ton with torrents. with dc++ you have more control as to who you download from and who downloads from you and at what speeds.. you would be downloading stuff that other students have.. its most likely that its the same stuff you are interested in..

and about the speed, the good thing is, mcmaster has a great internet connection.. so the speed will most likely depend on the limit of YOUR connection, or when too many people are connected to the same network in that residence or sometimes mcmaster might cap that particular user.. so basically most of the time it should go very very fast.. lol
