taking first year coerces in second year
so i am kind of confused as far as taking coerces goes in second year. I am in Communication Studies and so i will be taking all the mandatory coerces for that, along with other coerces that look interesting, but one thing i was wondering was if you could take a first year course without punishment in second year. do things work like they do in high school where you have to take the right level coerces in the right year or you will find yourself back for a fifth year, or is it just that you need to take the mandatory coerces for your degree along with other credits to fill your required number of credits. i hope my question wasn't too confusing.
thanks

If you are in a 4 year program, you can take up to 48 units in first year courses. (So if you did 30 units in first year, you can do 18 units beyond that). If you are in a 3 year program, you can do up to 42 units from first year courses - or 12 units if you've already done 30 units in your first year. hope that helps.

I would also like to add that only 48 first year units will go towards your degree. If you want to take more first year courses as extra you still can, it just won't count towards your degree. I just wanted to add that in case some people need to take a bunch of first year courses for program requirements or professional/graduate school requirements but feel they are being restricted.

Ah, Jeremy, I wasn't aware of this! I've been killing myself wondering if I can take more first year classes without resolving to sucking it up or begging and pleading.
So basically, outside of the 120 units, you can take more first year classes. ... That means summer. ;_;

What I don't understand is why he chose to spell it like that after proving he obviously knows how to spell it the right way, as shown by his other posts.

Yeah, it's just like taking more electives than what you are given. You can do it but they all won't count towards your degree. I'm like 99% sure of this.

Do they count towards your CA though? 'Cause if not then there's not really a point in taking them.

I'm pretty sure they do, probably should ask an advisor. I might drop by tomorrow but I'll probably try my program counsellor first since she is most likely less busy. I talked to her today about my program courses and I got to her right away.

yes they do .. i've asked the adviser before about this. If you go over 48 and they are all relevant for your degree though, apparently they can make an exception but the adviser wasn't really clear about that.

What do you mean by "relevant for your degree"? Because I don't think any programs require to you take more than 48 level I credits.
