Ticket for blowing a stop sign on a BICYCLE
Hey Guys
So here's the situation.
Last friday I went to 1280 with my boyfriend. We decide to bike there and back cuz it's faster. On our way back at 2:30AM, a mac security car pulled us over at the intersection on university avenue right next to div college.
He was pulling us over (ON OUR BICYLES) for blowing the stop sign. IN THE MIDDLE OF A DESERTED STREET that isn't even really a street.
Anyways so we got a ticket. And I think it's ridiculous.
So my question to you is. Have you ever not payed a ticket from Mac security and what happens when you don't?
Thanks

From what I've heard, the fine goes up and it goes on your student account (i.e. You can't graduate until you pay) as long as they can identify you.
Though being fined for running a stop sign, on campus, on a bike at 3AM is a bit ridiculous...

Did you give him your student number/real name? If not, don't pay the ticket. Bicycles don't have license plates. So how the heck will they know it's you that paid the ticket?
It could be anyone.

I hate to be "that guy", but you're technically supposed to follow the rules of the road if you're biking on the road. I know it was on campus and it was 3am, but people would be pretty pissed if they saw someone in a car do what you did.
It sucks, but it's the rules. A friend of mine was given a parking ticket and tried to not pay it - but they ended up getting letters to their house and had to pay. Unless you lied to security about your name/address, you 'll have to pay.

All Mac 5-0 officers are fully deputized as police, with the same training as Hamilton Police. The only difference is that they are "Peace Officers", which means they have limited jurisdiction (campus). If you do something illegal on campus, a Mac 5-0 officer can charge you exactly the same way and with the same effect as a "real police officer".
That said, it's obscene that they would give you a ticket like that at 3 am... I understand it during the day, but it's brutal at night. I feel your pain.

if you didn't have lights then it makes more sense for getting ticketed at night, I'm not sure why you think its crazy that nighttime should be a time of letting people off the hook easily, especially when biking at night is more dangerous. And also if you didn't have helmets (I know its not illegal to not wear them) it would look like this to a cop: 1. drunk people 2. on a device that requires balance which drunk people typically do not have 3. not wearing helmets despite their inebriety 4. they don't have lights even though it is nighttime 5. they aren't following the rules of the road 6. they are being disrespectful 7. Ticketing people will show I am doing my job
if you had helmets and lights I apologize but look at it from the cops perspective

Unpleasant? Yes.
Unfair? No.
Even I'd be rather pissed, but rules are rules.
Pay the ticket and avoid further trouble.

Silly question, would they give you a ticket if you are walking on the street at Mac at 3am in the morning and failed to stop at the stop sign? Just curious.
