 Believe me, I totally felt the same way when I resigned myself to living off campus first year. It definitely ended up being a huge blessing in disguise. You might have to work a bit harder to get involved and get that same sense of community that res gives you, but the rewards are greater as well.
And there's a myriad of practical benefits that go with it as well. Just approach it with an open mind, and I'm sure you'll end up having a blast.
(Also, having access to six upper year students is very handy, especially if they're in your program).
