it used to be optional in my year. Honestly, if people don't want to spend money on orientation, isn't it kind of unethical to force them to pay?

This was decided at the assembly a few years ago. So it was done by vote, it's not "forced." The students at the time thought it should be made mandatory to allow for more funds to be used to make Welcome week a better experience for incoming first-years as a whole, while making it inclusive and open for everyone.

well, it is kind of forced since people who voted for mandatory fees are not the incoming students plus I think the orientation was not THAT fun but obviously everyone have different opinions. I think people who did not want to pay for orientation have their reasons and should not be mandated to such fees.

That's certainly a valid point. But it means that those people felt that WW was worth it to make it mandatory. Of course, and that's your opinion, but other people loved it. Especially that 3500 of the 5K students coming in are in residence and the majority of them end up going to at least a few events. It's just like how you can't opt out of the HSR. Because everyone pays, it ends up being so cheap for everyone and a better for everyone overall.

Haha me too. I feel terrible for my friends who dish out $120ish each month for the TTC in Toronto, when that's what we pay ALL year.

Lol that's true, not to mention that it takes 1 hour to get to st. george from scarborough by TTC, its absolutely a horrifying experience if you are commuting.

It was to "not make people feel left out" and it simplifies the administration process and prob some student vote
