This may not seem so bad, but to me, this drove me absolutely nuts.
I went to lunch with a girl before going for a skate at Nathan Phillips Square a few years ago. The whole time, she stared like, an inch above my forehead. Never looked me in the eyes, and only talked about her and her friends. I was absolutely mind-blown. I couldn't even be a normal man and just smile and nod. It drove me nuts. After lunch was over, I got the bills split, and I told her my parents needed me to go home, so I left.
Never spoke to her again-sies.

Maybe she was just nervous... She never looke you in the eyes? She was definitely nervous if she only talked about herself and her friends. I understand why you were freaked, Master & Commander.

Ask the other person a question? Talk about some third party subject not directly related to either of the two people in the discussion.
I'm not exactly a social guru, but that's pretty straight forward, no?
I've met plenty of people who just love to talk about themselves and their lives when in social situations or dates. And when other people are talking, they're too busy thinking about the next thing to say to bother listening back. They aren't nervous at all, they just don't give a shit about anyone else and love being listened to. You have to admit, it's a nice feeling when you can talk about yourself with open ears on the other end, but it's selfish if you lack the ability to do the same. |
